After hours of rehearsals, students across the District have delivered many impressive performances, including some that are being recognized nationally. Recent highlights follow.

Elementary children from Capitol Hill Elementary and Second Street Community School are finalists in a national music contest entered by thousands. In the CBC Music Class Challenge, Second Street has two finalists with one in the Kindergarten to Grade 3 category of Elementary Performance, Vocal or Instrumental. They performed Scars to Your Beautiful by Alessia Cara. Capitol Hill’s finalist is in the Grades 4-6 Junior Instrumental category for their rendition of Lost Boy by Ruth B. Second Street’s second finalist is in that same category with their performance of Stitches by Shawn Mendes. Winners will be announced later this month. Children at Confederation Park Elementary delivered an impressive opera. They sang, danced and acted in A Letter to Wanda. Based on the book The Hundred Dresses, the storyline explores powerful themes such as forgiveness and empathy. As a school, Confederation Park is also a District Program of Choice, providing Education Through the Arts.
At Morley Elementary, singers, dancers and instrumentalists put on a colourful performance of Where the Wild Things Are. Families at Buckingham Elementary were charmed by the students’ presentation of December in Our Town.
Glenwood Elementary’s concert, Winter Time Machine, was a musical blast from the past featuring the music of the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s. Members of the audience sang and danced in their chairs to songs from their youth. Students put on a spectacular performance at Brentwood Park Elementary with their Holly Jolly Jalopy winter concert, complete with special art.
Musicians at Burnaby North Secondary – including their renowned marching band – put on a professional-level performance, together with students in the District’s Music Production and Technology program. At Byrne Creek Community School’s Winter Concert, students played classic holiday songs including All I Want for Christmas and The Chipmunk Song. The talents of students in guitar classes, choir, orchestra and jazz band were featured in Moscrop Secondary’s A December to Remember.
Cariboo Hill Secondary put on a Winter Concert featuring jazz band, concert bands and choir. The school community at Alpha Secondary had sold-out shows of their Winter Cabaret. The performances included classes and clubs who did everything from dancing, performing and behind-the-scenes work to staffing the concession.
Lakeview Elementary’s choir delighted shoppers at a local mall with their holiday cheer. Stride Avenue Community School held a Nighttime Symphony, complete with a finale that featured choreographed and synchronized movements to the Eurythmics song Sweet Dreams.
At Sperling Elementary’s winter concert, children were inspired to sing about their favourite author in their performance of “Munschâ€ing Through the Snow. Audiences were enchanted by the Winter Wonderland Hotel, put on by children at Kitchener Elementary. It included a visit by “Old Man Winter†who arrived with the first snowfall.
