Igniting Minds with Meaningful Learning Opportunities

Across the District, staff work to engage, educate, and empower learners through a variety of ways. Some recent examples are shared below.

Under the guidance of Indigenous artistÌýSimon James from the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation, the entire school at Inman Elementary took part in a carving project entitled Everyone is Welcome – Everyone is Valued. The school collaborated with the District’s Indigenous Education team to ensure local teachings and protocol were honoured. The final carving incorporates Coast Salish stories and symbols – including hands raised in a traditional welcome. Students signed the back before the carving was installed near the school entrance, where it is placed as a symbol of respect, inclusion, and Reconciliation.

Students at Burnaby North Secondary had an opportunity to watch a presentation of Survivors, which is inspired by the lives and words of ten Holocaust survivors. The Holocaust Educational Theatre troupe answered questions from youth afterwards.

Children in a Ìýlunchtime Chess Club at Montecito Elementary are getting the chance to practice strategic thinking and problem solving. At Brentwood Park Elementary, a Grade 4/5 class spent time on budgeting and expenses, building presentations to showcase their learning.

Students at Twelfth Avenue Elementary practiced musical awareness by focusing on listening skills – identifying loud and soft sounds in a piece by Johann Strauss Sr. A Grade 6/7 class at Brantford Elementary tested Darwin’s theory by seeing how natural selection shapes which finches survive.

A Grade 1 class at Westridge Elementary got creative in their story workshop with ideas about who lives behind the doors. Children at Maywood Community School explored a Periodic Table of Social Emotional Learning.
