Exploring Black History Month and Elevating Joy

Throughout the District there have been many opportunities to learn about Black history, futures and joy.

In a District-wide event to start Black History Month, youth from several high schools participated in Lift Every Voice, a special musical celebration. Featuring Marcus Mosely and Friends, the lead vocalist is a renowned gospel singer, speaker, and member of the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame. Before the performance, Mosely spent several days with the Burnaby South Secondary Choir, as well as with students in Black Excellence and anti-racism groups from Cariboo Hill, Byrne Creek, Burnaby South, and Burnaby Central Secondary schools. The youth explored how music unifies and serves as a powerful platform. Watch highlights from Lift Every Voice .

Confederation Park Elementary students shared the accomplishments of Canadian civil rights activist Viola Desmond on their weekly school news broadcast. Several classes at Brentwood Park Elementary had the chance to participate in lessons about prominent Black leaders and experts in their field, including NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, agricultural scientist George Washington Carver and painter Alma Thomas. The hands-on experiences were led by Leadership students from Alpha Secondary.

At the start of the month, award-winning rapper Missy D visited French Immersion schools. Originally from Rwanda, she draws inspiration from both western artists and traditional music from across Africa. Missy D began rapping in Grade 5 in both English and French and was named the 2024 Francophone Artist of the Year by Western Canadian Music Awards.

Byrne Creek Community School came together with a potluck to celebrate Black History Month. The dishes were also an opportunity to sample cuisine from Black communities around the world. Byrne Creek was also one of several schools to participate in Limbo for All – a chance to share and honour Caribbean culture.
